Brotherhood of Blood: Week 6

Greetings readers! Back again with my weekly blog update, with Week 6! Wow time is FLYING by!

So before I get into my progress for the week, I wanted to report on some of the reading I have been doing to stay engaged. I finished Marie Lu’s book “Legend.” If you like Young Adult, Dystopian books I recommend it. I enjoyed the dual perspectives in the book, and the audio narrator was solid. That said, the book itself didn’t offer anything drastically different from other YA Dystopia, so keep that in mind.

More exciting, I have started “Skin Game” by Jim Butcher, the current newest installment of the Dresden Files. I am about six hour in and really enjoying it. If you like fast paced stories that emphasize character development and growth, I really recommend The Dresden Files; it has been an amazing discovery, and I can’t believe I waited this long to read the series.

Finally, on my last update I discussed my drive to finally complete Final Fantasy 7, well I am happy to report that the game is beaten, I was stunned by the ending, and now I am back in the thick of painting. If you want to read my full review you can find it here; beating this game has been very cathartic, and rewarding. Play it if you haven’t!

Ok, so onto miniatures, the thing that most (all?) of you are here for. Well I did it! I completed the Soul Reaver Infantry unit!!!!!

Here you can see the unit in all its gory glory. The models themselves are rather static, so I tried to position them in a V to give a bit more movement and dynamism to the unit. I think it worked.

The thing I am most proud of with this unit has to be the cloaks. I layered about 2 more highlights then I normally would have, and I think these extra steps created some great depth to the folds, while popping. This contrasts nicely with the bright blue and darker silver of the armor.

The leader of the unit, forming the point of the V had this severed head in his hand, which sort of looked odd.

However, after thinking about it, I thought this was the perfect chance to give a bit more gore to the unit, and showcase the messy feeding the leader had just been doing. This was more a last minute inspiration, and could have gone horrendous, but the Blood for the Blood God technical paint once again did its job. Some light application and it gives the appearance of blood dripping down the front of his armor. The detail isn’t readily apparent at a glance, and really rewards looking a bit longer at the unit, the perfect thing to bring people in, and keep them looking at the army.

After all that hard work, I thought it would be important to take a pic with both units from the army, this way I get an important sense of accomplishment, but also a gentle nudge showing me how much further I have to go!

An interesting, but unintended consequence. The “Peasants” are much darker then the clean vibrant vampires, which I think will really help set apart the elite units from the rabble, love it!

Right, so onto my next commitment, I want to spring board off this first major step towards a finished army by working on a few quicker refitting projects. So, I want to work on the two troops of skeleton archers, and the catapult for the army, in addition to these three units, I want to rebase the 1 vampire on food I have completed. Getting several small, but still important projects like these done quickly should give me more momentum for the project, which will be essential as I am beginning to enter crunch time with only a little over 2 months left!
