Hello readers! Back at it again with another Brotherhood of Blood update! Last week I planned to finish the swarm of Tyranids from the Space Hulk board game, and then return to the Brotherhood of Blood after this palette cleanser.
Well, one part of that goal achieved, the Tyranids are completed!
These are largely just painted with contrast paints; however, I did highlight up the yellow once, and same with the red, just to give them a more complete look.
These were a LOT of fun to paint, and since they were board game pieces I felt less stressed to get them even close to my usual standard, and just wanted to play around with contrast some. At the time of the contrast line release, I wrote a review after using them for a bit, you can find that review here.
Well, with this second go around with them, I have to say I see the value. This painted up QUICK, I would say maybe 5-7 hours total, minus the broodlord, which probably was about 4-5 hours itself.
One thing I learned, was that Contrast Medium really seems to be the “secret” sauce to getting the most out of these paints. For the yellow I slopped it on, with a 75% contrast 25% Medium mix, but the grey, to give more color variation, I diluted to about a 50/50 mix, and for the bone, I took a 75% Medium 25% Snakebite Leather Contrast mix, to get that lighter tan finish.
While this won’t necessarily help me with Brotherhood of Blood, this is valuable information for when I return to my Forces of the Abyss, which I think with a bit of an army color shift, will take to contrast amazingly!
Now some readers will note, “oh man, he is already in ‘plan next project’ mode,” and it is true, focusing has been extremely tough for me. I am dipping my toes in 40k, and itching to paint some Necrons, I have these board game pieces I want to paint, my Lord of the Rings are perpetually shunted off to the side, AND the Forces of the Abyss is sitting lurking. To make matters worse, Undead are holding their spot as the most popular army of 3rd edition, and I am someone who really craves to play something unique.
BUT, this just means I need more focus, and more drive, to hit this project DONE so that I can then enjoy those other things. With Covid19 in full effect, all the events I was painting for are out the window; Unplugged Gt canceled, Vanguard GT rescheduled, even events in the distant future are getting the axe! I don’t blame TOs, in fact, I thank them for making responsible decisions, BUT this makes it quite tough for me to create the drive I once had, I am a person who works best with goals and dates, and when those go out the window I lose focus fast.
So, it is time for me to select a future event and date; Vanguard GT’s new date, June 26-28. Could this get rescheduled, yes, but having this as a goal should get me moving again.
Now Vanguard is 2250, and with more time I wanted to play around with my list a bit, keeping everything I have painted, but reworking stuff based on the extra 2 months. So, without further delay, here is my new army list I am working towards!
x2 Skeleton Spearmen Regiments
x3 Ghoul Troops
x2 Soul Reaver Infantry Regiments
x2 Skeleton Archer Troops
1 Deathpack Regiment
1 Horde of Werewolves with Brew of Strength
1 Balefire Catapult
Ghoul Gast with Wings
Vampire Lord with Mead of Madness
Vampire Lord on Undead Dragon with Sanguinary Scripture
Necromancer with Drain Life (5), and Trickster’s Wand
So with this list as the goal remaining to paint: x3 Ghoul Troops, 1 Soul Reaver Infantry Regiment, 1 Deathpack Regiment, 1 Horde of Werewolves, Necromancer, Rider for Undead Dragon.
The Deathpack regiment and Necromancer are finished, but need to be rebased and touched up, the rest is completely unfinished. It’s a decent amount of work, but an achievable amount in two months, especially if I can get to work!
So, first I have already base coated the Werewolves and I want to start them this week, finishing them may be a bit too much to ask, but at least 2 of the minis finished, and the base done, will be my goal.
Wish me luck!
Jake,
Great to see the progress in your work and your comments on the contrast paints. While I have them, and have used them, I haven’t played with the medium. As soon as I am able to buy some with my next order I look forward to experimenting with it!
Ray
Expect to see some step by step attempts with contrast on some lower abyssals in the upcoming months.
