The Top 10
It’s that time of year again! It’s time for a good ol’ top 10 round up!
This year was a bit different than the previous as we were lacking in tournament coverage and excessive amounts of data to make Brinton analyze. However, this year saw us finishing up our 3rd ed coverage with army reviews and a new tier ranking system (which you all seem to eat up), and the start of Dash28 Live. So big things were still happening in the realm of Kings of War content.
Today let’s do a recap of the Top 10 most popular articles to grace the Dash 28 website in glorious 2020!
Spoiler Alert! I was not joking about you guys liking army reviews….
#1: Kings of War 3rd Edition: Undead Army Review
Now this really should not come as any big surprise. Remember what I said about you guys liking army reviews? Well add in that Undead were the hot topic throughout 2020, especially around the US Masters tournament and the start of Call to Arms in the Spring. In the Call to Arms tournament, Undead was actually the most popular army played through all the rounds.
Anyway this great tier ranking of the army written by Jake that outlines those “OMG that’s so broken” units, along with the “huh that’s in the Undead army” units. So obviously give it a read if you want to better understand elements of Undead… especially if you are playing against them #downwithundead
#2: You Can Do That? Kings of War Gotcha Moves and How to Prevent Them
Stepping aside from army reviews for a moment, don’t worry we will get back to those, we have a simply superb article from Brinton Williams himself, King of the Rainbow Gifs. This fantastic article outlines those “gotcha moves” that can frustrate newbies and veterans of the game alike. Brinton lays out a number of these in great detail and wonderfully made rainbow gifs making the information very easy to digest.
#3: Kings of War 3rd Edition: Imperial Dwarf Army Review
Oh, look, an army review. I feel like I am going to have to say that way too often and am already out of jokes to make about it.
#4: Kings of War 3rd Edition: Kingdoms of Men Army Review – The Ultimate in Average Armies
Another of our army reviews, this time brought to you by none other than Brinton himself. I am biased to anything KoM as they captured my heart back in 2019. You should know, I totally liked them before it was cool (and definitely before any KoM article would make a top 10 list).
Next up for #5-#7 we have a few more army tier reviews! Two of which were written by guest writers who took the time to bring us insight on the armies that are their specific cup of tea, because we can’t all be experts on everything.
#5: Kings of War 3rd Edition: Varangur Army Review
#6: Kings of War 3rd Edition: Order of the Green Lady Army Review
#7: Kings of War 3rd Edition: Forces of Basilea Army Review
#8: Kings of War 3rd Ed First Impressions: Kingdoms of Men
So where most of these army related articles are tiered army reviews, this was a first look at what had changed for KoM coming in to 3rd Ed. Sticking with KoM’s new found mainstream popularity, they have snagged two Top 10 article spots! And I wrote this one, so obviously it is awesome.
#9: Kings of War 3rd Edition: Forces of the Abyss Review
Army review. What more can I say?
#10: Kings of War 3rd Edition: Northern Alliance Review
See #9.
See? I was not joking about our reader’s overall love of army reviews with tier rankings. If you are looking for a review for an army that did not make the Top 10, do not fear! We have all of them covered and you can find them here.
Articles You May Have Missed!
Now I have given you the most popular articles of 2020, but how about I also give you some articles that probably flew under your radar this year? Maybe you want to read something other than army reviews? Well, look no further!
Ogres of the Moonlit Hunt – Hobby Blog
If maybe you want to dive deeper into the hobby side of Kings of War, this 16 part blog from Greg shows his absolutely stunning Ogre army. During this series, you get to see the army evolve while seeing his painting of the models, some battle reports, and the background and lore for his Ogre army!
Editor- I would also add, I (Jake) wrote a similar series tracking my experiences painting the Brotherhood of Blood. I only got half-finished, unlike Greg who pushed the project to completion, but I think it still makes a fun read, found here
Picking a Winner: Here Comes the Judge
Mike takes a look at different approaches to paint judging and the pros and cons of the different methods. The article is very helpful for TOs maybe looking to see what options are out there, but also a good one for the everyday tournament goer to understand some of the complexities involved in paint judging.
Kings of War Fiction: Slaves No More
A guest article from Riley giving us a short piece of fiction.
Stubborn as a Dwarf – Post Masters Update
Here we have a piece from Mike, going over his experience and games that took place at the US Master’s back in February. I am just here to keep you reading, because what else do you have to do? Well, we both know you have some minis to paint… but you probably aren’t going to.
Best of the Rest 2020: Who Ever Wins… We Lose
Now if you are like, “why do I care about Masters? I am just a run of the mill midtable wonder.” While not to fear I also have my Best of the Rest coverage, as I played in that side event at Masters. Now you probably would have got more great tournament coverage from me this year if 2020 hadn’t been such an asshole.
Check out this excellent guest article by Riley Nadeau, as he discusses how he maintains drive and focus on a project, something every gamer probably could use more of.
Opinion Piece: Balance, Flavor … Allies
Another awesome guest article, this one by Guy Harper-Day, discussing the merits of the Kings of War system, his thoughts, as a casual gamer, on Balance, Flavor, and most controversially Allies.
