After a busy Christmas and cold filled January the Vanguard adventure took a bit of a backseat. Fortunately things are getting back on track which means I can post an update.
Get ahead, get a hat
The main focus over the last few weeks has been adding an array of stylish headwear. Before starting on a model it’s important to take a few moments to consider how a hat will alter the composition. With the Captain I had removed the back banner included with the original paymaster, to restore balance I needed to make her hat tall and broad. The crew were a different story. Having largely bald heads or small pony tails they would become top heavy with large hats. I chose to stick with bandannas or sock hats for the most part. Naturally I got bored and ended up attempting a tricorn too, the wisdom of which should reveal itself in time.
Master Mate
In the first article I’d only just begun work on the Mate. With the anchor dominating the model I elected to keep him bare headed. Too much detail high up would make an already broad sculpt look somewhat ridiculous. To address the existing balance issues I have been building up the pair of sailors slops for maximum nautical goodness. Further detail has been added with a chain on the anchor and rivets attaching the hook’s ferule to the arm.
Ok Boomer
Imagine my joy at finding a loyalty points offer from Mantic. Actually, don’t bother, I was mildly enthused at best. It was appreciated though and meant I effectively purchased a new model postage free. After a long look at the Matriarch I eventually settled on the Boomer Sergeant. The Boomer offers a more dynamic pose and adds a pair of piratical pistols to the warband. Who doesn’t love a model that looks like they’ve leapt onto an enemy ship and started blasting? The short and stubby pistols the model came with didn’t give the feel I was after so naturally I began the process of changing that.
That’s all for now. Next update should hopefully cover all the little details and finishing touches. Oh WAIT! I forgot to show you the Captain’s new hat…
