2022 draws to a close and 2023 looms over us like a Greater Air Elemental eyeing the flank of my Ice Naiads. Changes (like flank charges) can be intimidating but also offer us the chance to draw a line under past struggles and make plans for the future. Taking a moment to sit down, reflect on the year gone and look to the next can help focus the mind for Kings of War fun. Mantic have made some announcements on what to expect for 2023 here and the tournament diary is starting to fill up here which can aid your plans. I’ve also poked members of the Dash 28 team until some New Years Hobby Resolutions fell out to offer some guidance, motivation and potential hilarity.
Mike
“I’m going to paint at least four units this year. Two earth elemental and two forest shambler units.”
With a reputation for being a rock of the community it’s no wonder Mike’s resolutions embody his solid, dependable nature. He has also made the cunning decision to keep his options open with vague targets. Could it be four hordes? Four regiments? Four individual models? Only time will tell whether he barely manages it or surpasses all expectations. It’s important to be flexible and forgiving with yourself when it comes to the hobby, don’t make your leisure activities a chore or hold yourself to targets that will leave you exhausted. Be like Mike.
Michael
“Finish printing and painting a new army.”
As someone who understands technical things our Michael has decided to employ cool machines. What will the army be? Who’s designs will he be printing? These are important questions I don’t have the answers to but I hope we can get some updates through the year on using technology in the hobby. I say technology but it involves mixing dangerous substances and watching your creations rise out fully formed from the primordial goop. It’s basically wizardry we’re talking about here. The guy is a literal wizard.
Greg
“I am going to get enough of my Dwarf army painted to the point where I can bring it to tournaments.”
It wouldn’t be Kings of War if we didn’t have a guy talking about Dwarfs. This resolution embodies the more competitive side of our hobby. Tournaments are great fun and getting to share our work with other people whilst trying to outsmart them is highly rewarding. Tournaments can also offer small targets over the course of a year to keep you motivated. Wish you’d had an extra cannon last time? Better get it done in time for the next event.
Jess
“I will become Mother of Drakons! All will worship me!”
The Northern Alliance is my first love. This is my year to shine and pull myself out of that bottom table positioning and reach for top table. Thanks to my lovely in laws I can now add Frostfangs to the roster in support of the Ice Elementals, who doesn’t love an adorable gang of murder bears? Then I can justify painting the pre-loved Mantic Dragon that turned up a couple of days ago.
Chris
“I want to get my LotR Elf army for KoW collected this year.”
Sometimes we need to scratch that nerd itch. The other nerd itch. No, not that one either. Let me start again. It’s truly special to mix a love of stories that bring us joy with a wargame that also brings us joy. Chris isn’t collecting this army for any reason beyond enjoyment of the process so any progress will be a success. Hopefully we’ll be able to see some beautiful Tolkien inspired regiments in the future.
Fingers crossed this gives you something to think about as you reflect on the last 12 months and think toward the next. Thankyou for all your support and we look forward to sharing more hobby content with you in 2023.
Well, it’s only taken me 26 days to decide my New Year hobby resolution is to… build a KoW army! Have been looking for a mass battle system to justify printing and painting a Rogukan (Lot5R fantasy Japan) army. Time to make a start.
Also – Jessica, I’d like to thank you for your article last year on rank-and-file female representation. It’s a valid consideration which hadn’t occurred to me for this army, but now I’ve decided to try for at least 50% female-presenting minis for each unit, if possible. Thanks for the inspiration!
