Kings of Hobby: The Snakes of Firebrand

Welcome to the adventures of Firebrand! And by extension the rebirth of a project I always wanted to do right, but never had the opportunity to do.  I’m Joey Greek, avid gamer and amateur hobbyist.  For people who don’t know me or remember my old blog, I used to write about salamanders and have been itching for a return to what I started in 2017.

Salamanders is an army I’ve always loved, who doesn’t love dinosaurs stomping over those evil and arrogant elves afterall! But salamanders in KoW don’t play well to the old Warhammer Fantasy archetypes, and I struggled trying to convert a gw army into salamanders.  So this gives me a chance to just start from scratch, using a few holdovers from my old collection but mainly highlight a new feel and type of play, as well as an alternate aesthetic for the army as a whole.

So the alternate aesthetic I mentioned? Rather than adhere to the old thinking of lumbering lizardmen and small frog people supporting, I’m going with a more sleek and lithe snake-men look, with bows and crossbows for my corsairs.  There will also be gator men, and massive gorgons and potentially larger monsters as the project gets along.

My goals for this over the next 6 months are

  • Have a completed army in time for Mountaineer Gt (this is end of June I believe? so about 6 months)
  • Explore some new techniques with basing like water effects
  • Use more out of the box model selection to expand on what people may see as potential salamander units.
  • Use some new paints from other lines so people can see what other options are out there.

To kickoff this project I’m going to be starting small.  I’m just finishing my 95% mantic elf army for Adepticon, so month 1 will be a small painting update with it ramping up into month 2 and 3.

Goal One: Finish Firebrand and the Mage Priest

Yes that is mantics Artakl model. I love artakl herself too, and maybe later down the road if I get Mantics Firebrand I can run both together. But for now this saves a little bit of money.
This little bugger has been sitting in my to be finished que for nearly 2 full years now, and it’s about time I got him finished. He’s a beautiful finecast skink priest from GW, and should work nice as a high color model for the army. Yes its a skink in a snake men army, but its a swamp theme. I’m sure there are frogs in swamps.

Goal Two: Rebase/Touch up the Tyrants

Yay, I can finally use my lightbox for these models. This is the holdover unit from my old Salamander unit. These guys are Privateer Press Gator Men, and I love these models. It’s gonna suck rebasing them, but with my theme moving to swamp these would stand out abit too much. It also gives me an opportunity to touch up some details like the feathers.

Goal 3: Finish a troop of Corsairs

The freshly buffed corsairs with their very shiny new formation are gonna make a re-appearance in my salamander lists! And yes, you can fact check me I ran corsairs 2 years ago in my first 1 day with Salamanders. This model is from the snake man kit by NorthStar Miniatures. I will be using this kit for my ancients too, and for a fairly budget kit I am very happy with the amount of detail these guys have.

  1. Good stuff man, I’ve been quite interested to see where you take the Sallies. And snake- and gator-peoples is a place close to my heart, so many sweet af minis to wedge in (Mierce probably topping the list). Will be watching!
