Dash28 Campaign: Enter the Hag

Greetings everyone, I am extremely excited to get started on this new Dash28 collaborative project, namely our map campaign! I absolutely LOVE map campaigns, the narrative side of gaming is what gets me the most excited, and as an avid strategy board and video game player, map campaigns add a component that hits all my boxes.

A little about me as a gamer, I am located in the Baltimore, Maryland area. I am a long-time wargamer, with nearly 20 years of experience. I consider myself more of a hobbyist than a gamer, though I do greatly enjoy the strategic play and choices Kings of War brings.

I play both Abyssal Dwarves and Undead, which is why I am excited to introduce my army for this campaign…

Zorida the Hag and her Swamp Terrors

I painted this model nearly 10 years ago now!

My army for this campaign will be led by the Hag Zorida, a character I loved from the game Malifaux, and works perfectly to lead a horde of Nightstalkers. Zorida will be representing a Horror in my games, slinging magic and spells while leading swarms of Scarecrows and other beings of the dead forest.

Zorida has haunted the Ruins of Vrett for as long as anyone can remember, perhaps she was even there when the Celestian City fell. Living within a straw-covered hut sitting on stilts, Zorida is occasionally sought out by desperate villagers seeking a boon or healing. While Zorida frequently grants these gifts, they always come with a price… rumor has it that Zorida’s hut is filled with tiny dolls, each bearing a likeness to past clients.

Zorida for hundreds of years has been content with wandering the Ruins of Vrett; however, any force that seeks to attack, explore, or even enter the ruins without permission has been repulsed by hundreds of animated scarecrows, dark beasts from the shadows, and other unspeakable terrors. After each incursion, the aggressors’ bodies are hung from trees on the borders of the dark forest, their remains serving as a warning, their skeletal remains rattling in the wind.

Besides her own magical abilities and animations, Zorida has many allies who serve her, in return for being allowed to live in the dark forests and ruins of Vrett. A group of unusual child-like beings with unfathomable power lurks in the Ruins, and the vicious goblins of the forest all pay homage to Zorida.

With armies and generals once more descending upon the region, Zorida sees that once again she will be forced to defend her borders. After weeks of reading the bones and gazing into her cauldron of seeing, Zorida has concluded that these upstarts will not be content with merely leaving her be and that for the first time in nearly a thousand years, the residents of Vrett must march to war…

Campaign Hopes

I am really excited to play a force that I cannot normally play in Kings of War. This will serve as a test, as I own literally hundreds of old Malifaux models that could represent this army amazingly, especially when accompanied by some Mantic models!

So one of my biggest goals is to get a taste and feel for the army, try different units, and see what I like, as I may build this into a new force for 3rd Edition.

I also hope to use this as an opportunity to finally give Universal Battle a try. It is a service I have been contemplating for a while, but one I have avoided up until now. This campaign will be the perfect thing to force me to finally give it a go.

My first battle is against King Billiam and his Dwarves, which should provide a nice chance to play a narrative and isometric scenario, look forward to our battle report in August!

  1. Excellent backstory, Jake! Aside from Scarecrows, which units are you planning on using?

    1. Hey Greg,

Thanks man! I want to give a few things a try, particularly the Butcher’s block formation, with a Shadow Hulk. Mostly because the Dreamer and his monstrosity make an amazing Shadow Hulk.

With so many Scarecrows I also think dopplegangers feel appropriate and I never see them taken, so I am definitely planning to give them a go as well.
