Dash28 Campaign: The Great Royal Expedition Force of Balimar led by Burgus Stoneheart, Might of the Mountain

Greetings,

My name is Alex and I am an avid Kings of War player and also write a series of tactics articles for Dash28. I have been playing pretty regularly since the start of 2nd Edition, both in tournaments and casually with my gaming group based out of Northern Virginia.

I jumped at the opportunity to play a campaign. I think they are super fun and challenging in that it can make you think outside the box both in army list building and also with different tactics on the battlefield. Narrative play was one of the main reasons I got started in this hobby, so it feels great to go back to my roots so to speak.

One of my main motivating factors to play in the campaign was to play the dwarf army the way I envisioned it when I first built it back in the early days of KoW 2nd Edition. The Dwarf Kingdom of Balimar represents the old school icy mountain dwarfs. The ancient dwarf kingdom has decided to send an expedition force toward Kavus Keep in order to preserve it from all the foreign outsiders who seek to corrupt it. The rumors of long lost tunnels with loads of gems and other treasures have also caught the attention of the King’s advisers who decided to entrust this mission to the kingdom’s greatest general, Burgus Stoneheart. That all these new races have decided to focus their attention on a great dwarf wonder has made this mission personal. Any humans or even other dwarfs who think they know better will be met with swift justice as the full fury of the mountain will be used to smash any who get in our way.

Campaign Goals

My goals as far as the campaign:

  1. Capture as many Mountain tiles as possible: Preservation starts with making sure we get as much real estate as possible around Kavus Keep.
  2. Kill the opponent’s general. As stated before, this is personal. I want to try and track down every general and show them firsthand the Might of the Mountain!

Beyond that, I think the main goal is to try out some units, smash some face and overall have some fun.

Army Design

  1. No gunpowder units. The great Kingdom of Balimar has long ago achieved greatness through the use of Stone and Steel. Those new fancy gizmos are for Dwarfs too weak to wield an axe.
  2. Earth Elementals. I will take one unit for each mountain tile I control as the campaign progresses. As the stone priests explore deeper into the mines they will uncover greater runes and powers that come with them.

  1. I love how you’re reflecting the background/theme of the campaign in your army list design. I’m envisioning a Berserker Lord on Brock with the Mournful Blade to hunt out the enemy Generals, which would be quite intimidating!
