The Historian’s Record:

In the year 3864 of the Common Era in the month of the Yemtui Blossom, the forces of King Burgus Stoneheart did march upon the gathered ranks of the mysterious Captain at the base of the Thunderwall Mountain Pass.

King Burgus did breath out many a threatening towards his foe and did seek to strike him down, but it was not to be for the mysterious Captain did vanish from the field of battle that day after his troops fought the Might of the Mountain nearly to a standstill. Both dwarf and man retired from the struggle exhausted to the bone and weary of fighting. The dwarves did claim victory against their mercenary foe, but at great cost to their own number. King Burgus himself was nearly carried down beneath a wave of bladed steel, but for his great tenacity and fortitude he would have been sent to the halls of his ancestors.

After the battle, the dwarven king did lament his inability to fell his opponent in single combat, and even wondered at the existence of such a man as no corpse was recovered that did match his description.

While the king of the dwarves puzzled over the battle. The Captain himself did hie away into a hidden catacomb of passages that ran the length of the mountain range in that area. Before leaving, he sent a strange message to King Billiam XXXVIII to the East in the City of Alrenn.

Lead by a hermit dwarf whom the locals claimed was “mostly reliable” they traversed the twisting halls of the long-abandoned mines under Kavus hoping to find some way to bring them closer to the goal. Unfortunately, the dwarf’s moniker “Crazed Thaggis” as he was known turned out to be entirely too true and the Captain and his troops emerged in the foothills just outside of the village of Windy Hills.

Coincidentally, when the Captain emerged he did so at the opportune moment that the local mayor and his entourage were fleeing in a procession of padded coaches and wagons of provisions. The rather portly mayor, his name is recorded as being “Odious John” in part for his stingy and hurtful management of the citizens of Windy Hills and in part due to his body odor, begged the mercenary band to help free his village from the local wood sprites which had taken it over and enslaved the local Basilean troops in the area. The Captain agreed to investigate, though he doubted the promised price that the gluttonous mayor offered in return for the liberation of his “beloved” town.

In the town itself, the forest lord Yuil Drassill did converse with his tentative ally, the Abbess Sovleka. The treeman did bid her travel south to face against the gathering evil found there in the shadowed eaves of the forest surrounding the Ruins of Vrett. Begrudgingly the Abbess accepted this invitation, having been promised that her troops would be given safe passage through Drassill’s lands and ensured that the situation was dire. She set out, sending messengers back to the Dictator who was charged with mandates of their company along with paladin Gnaeus who lead them, telling them of their endeavor and hoping that he would look charitably upon her decision.

Meanwhile, Yuil Drassill mustered another army of spirits and elementals and prepared to stride out to meet the Captain and his forces.

To the south, in the halls of Alrenn, King Billiam the XXXVIII stormed into his keep where he bellowed for troops to be sent out to burn the woods to the southeast and hopefully destroy the evil that had attacked him there. It was not long before soldiers were dispatched with torches and kindling to do their lord’s bidding. The tough dwarf sat contemplating what he had seen in the forest, the darkness that had almost overwhelmed him and his scouts. He shuddered when he thought of the hideous creatures that had assailed him.

His thoughts were not long allowed to dwell on such matters as the messenger from the Captain did arrive shortly thereafter to deliver the message that another dwarven king had staked a claim on the fortress of Kavus and was advancing towards his eastern borders. The message infuriated Billiam and he swore on the long line of his namesake that he would hunt down this interloper and strike his head from his shoulders.

With this oath uttered the king did call his faithful battle pug to his side and together they rode off at the head of a column of dwarven warriors heading east towards the Thunderwall Mountain Pass to find their promised fight.

Meanwhile, in the Ruins of Vrett, the swamp hag sat, contemplating her battles and the ones that lay ahead, for now she was content to wait for the fight to come to her…

That will do for this month folks, check out the batreps and look for next months when we will have the following battles to look forward to!

About Ben Stoddard

I've been a gamer since I discovered D&D back in junior high. Now, several decades later, I've had a lot of experience playing games in several small communities and how to break the ice with players within a small social circle. I've also learned how to be involved with a national and global community through social media and networking to help deepen my experience with this hobby. I love Kings of War and I love to tell stories through the games that I play. I often times will run campaigns and tournaments for my local scene and I travel to at least one big tournament a year outside of my state, sometimes more. This is a great game, and I'm happy to be a part of the community that is pushing it further into the light of mainstream tabletop gaming!
