Brotherhood of Blood Hobby Blog: Week 12

Hello, miniature fans, Jake back with another Brotherhood of Blood update! It’s week 12, which means I have been doing this for about 3 months, WOW! Three months of staying relatively focused and active towards completing this army project, and I have quite a bit to show for it, especially when compared to my abysmal Kings of Hobby showing at the beginning of this site.

Anyway, enough of my back-patting, what have I been up to?

Well, as I mentioned last update, Counter Charge is hosting a painting competition, with prizes for winners, as well as spot prizes for participating, details can be found here. After some debating on my plan from the last update, I decided to stick with it, and try to get more pieces finished for the Brotherhood, so my plan is to paint a Ghoul Gast with Wings of Honeymaze, and a horde of Werewolves.

I started to toy with these two choices, getting them assembled, so that I could take preemptive pics for the competition entry. The Atlantis Werewolves you have already seen, but my Ghoul Gast I am pretty excited bout, here it is.

This is a Strigio Ghoul King, from the GW Terrorghiest kit, I added wings to it from Tyranid Gargoyles, and then placed him on this statue to give some dynamic movement. I converted this model years ago, right around the beginning of my Kings of War career, and never got around to painting it. I’m really excited to get it painted up and added to my force, in a pinch it could function as a Ghoul Gast or a Vampire, though eventually I plan to paint a separate, more knightly model to be my Vampire with Wings.

In addition to prepping these models, I got quite a lot of work done on my Undead Dragon model, completing the model itself (using the Terrorghiest model).

I love the Terrorghiest model, it is a perfect blend of cool details that pop and are different, without being overwhelmed with little details, like skulls, spikes, chains, ect. This made it a lot of fun to paint up, and relatively quick as well.

To help the model stand out, and add more color to it, I added strings of gore to various parts of the model, using hot glue and a toothpick for application. Once these strings dried, I painted Blood for the Blood God technical paint to all the exposed musculature, and to the added strings of hot glue. This paint dries semi-transparent, and dries shiny, making the surfaces it covers appear wet.

Before and after the gore effects

With spots of this on the Undead Footmen and my Soul Reavers, I thought this did a nice job of adding character to the model, while also tying it in with the rest of the army.

All that is left now is to paint and add a rider. I am torn between two current options and would like your opinions.

I have an old Dark Elf Beastmaster model. I like the dynamic movement this adds, both with his cloak flying up, while his spear is pointed down. I also like how this ties the rider in with the Blackguard models I used as Soul Reavers. This model is metal, meaning it will be a touch harder to put riding, and its holding reigns that aren’t on the Terrorghiest, my loose plan was to add more hot glue trails, and make it look like the reigns are exposed muscles.

Or, I have a Mannfred Von Carstein model from the mortarch kit. This model is plastic, so it will attach easier. He has some awesome features and comes with a saddle to sit in. However, the cape he normally wears doesn’t fit on the back of the Terrorghiest, meaning I won’t attach it, leaving a few odd trails of cloak on the model.

I am currently leaning to using the Dark Elf Beastmaster model. It’s one of my favorite old heroes riding a monster, and it would be cool to finally paint him up. I also like tying it into the other Vampires being used. However, I am open to input from all of you! I plan to finish the Werewolves and Ghoul Gast first, before returning to this rider, so there is time to sway me 🙂 .

My goal for this upcoming week is to paint the Ghoul Gast, and if I complete that early, start on the Werewolves.

P.S. Canny readers will notice I haven’t mentioned my reading habits at all this article. With so much to discuss I figured I would skip it this week, but not to worry, it will be back next update!
